Istrana Air Base is a military airfield in Istrana, in the Veneto region of north-east Italy, home to the Italian Air Force’s 51° Stormo (51st Wing). Established during the twentieth century, the base remains an active installation of the Aeronautica Militare and stands as one of the operational air-defence hubs of north-east Italy.

Istrana Air Base sits in the Treviso plain of Veneto, north-east Italy, roughly 25 kilometres north-west of Venice. It serves as the permanent home of the 51° Stormo, one of the Italian Air Force’s fighter wings responsible for air-policing and rapid-reaction duties. History

The airfield at Istrana traces its origins to early twentieth-century military aviation development in Veneto, a region that saw intense aerial activity during both World Wars. The 51° Stormo was formally constituted after World War II as part of Italy’s reorganised post-war air force, inheriting a long tradition of fighter aviation. Over the following decades the wing transitioned through successive generations of aircraft, from propeller-driven fighters to modern jet platforms. Today the base remains a key node in NATO’s integrated air-defence structure for southern Europe.

What you see

Visitors approaching the perimeter observe a standard military airfield layout: a main runway aligned with prevailing winds, parallel taxiways, hardened aircraft shelters (HAS), and a cluster of administrative and maintenance buildings. The 51° Stormo insignia — a historical emblem with roots in the Regia Aeronautica — is displayed at the entrance gates and on unit insignia throughout the base. Outside the security perimeter, the flat Venetian plain extends in all directions, providing long-distance visibility characteristic of the Po Valley edge.

Cultural significance

The 51° Stormo carries one of the longer continuous lineages in Italian military aviation, making Istrana a site of institutional memory for the Aeronautica Militare. The base also represents the legacy of Veneto’s strategic importance in twentieth-century air campaigns. Getting there

The base is located near the town of Istrana in the Province of Treviso. By road, take the A27 motorway (Venice–Vittorio Veneto) to Treviso Nord, then follow provincial roads towards Istrana (approximately 15 km). The nearest railway station is Treviso Centrale, served by regional trains from Venice Santa Lucia (around 30 minutes); from Treviso, local buses or a taxi reach Istrana in about 20 minutes.

Istrana airport, also known as Treviso-Istrana airport, has been a military airport in Treviso since June 18, 1916 where it is the first base of the 77th Airplane Squadron.



The airport is managed by the Italian Air Force and on the basis of the Ministerial Decree of 25 January 2008 published in the Official Gazette of 7 March 2008 the airport is classified as MOB (Main Operating Base) of the first group and as such carries out exclusively military activities. not being open to commercial traffic.



The airport is home to the 51st Wing whose flight department is made up of the 103rd Fighter Bomber Group (&quot;Indians&quot;), the 132nd CBR Group (Reconnaissance Fighter-Bombers) and the 101st O.C.U. (Operational Conversion Unit).



The three groups are equipped with the Italian-Brazilian ground attack aircraft AMX, from 9 April 2020 the 132nd Group also operates with Eurofighter Typhoon fighters, maintaining 2 flight lines at the same time. The base thus becomes part of the national air defense after 21 years.



On 5 June 2018 at the Istrana airport (TV), headquarters of the 51st Wing of the AM, a meeting was held as part of the integration process between air components of different Armed Forces.



The exchange was conceived with the aim of consolidating the knowledge of each other&#39;s capabilities and exploring potential employment synergies between fixed-wing assets of the AMI and helicopters of the AVES. involving the pilots of the AMX line of the 132nd CBR Group and a number of pilots and technicians of the 5th Rgt. AVES &ldquo;Rigel&rdquo;.



The exchange activity took place in the meeting room of the 132nd CBR Group through a series of presentations regarding the peculiarities of the respective assets and weapon systems, with particular reference to common experiences in operations outside national borders.



Particular emphasis was placed on TTP&#39;s (Techniques Tactics and Procedures) as part of the CAS (Close Air Support) missions carried out by the two departments in Afghanistan, in relation to their respective: supplied sensors, armaments, self-protection systems.



At the time of the First World War, the airport had already been in use for several years and the structure remained the same until after World War II, when an expansion was necessary due to the Cold War.



The Istran airfield of the great war does not correspond to the current one.



The Austrians knew it as a field of Trevignano because it had been built on the border with this municipality, north of Istrana and east of Vedelago.



From 25 May 1918 the 23rd Squadron was stationed there.



It became known for the Battle of Istrana.
