Overview
Atri is an ancient comune in the Province of Teramo whose name is the etymological origin of the Emperor Hadrian’s family name, the Aelii Hadriani. The Capitular Museum is one of the most significant repositories of sacred art in the Abruzzo region, preserving works that document the unbroken ecclesiastical tradition of the diocese from late antiquity to the early modern period. The museum complements a visit to the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, itself notable for its 13th-century cloister and remarkable 15th-century fresco cycle.
History
Atri has been an episcopal see since at least the early Christian period, and the cathedral chapter accumulated liturgical furnishings, manuscripts and votive objects over many centuries. The Capitular Museum was formally organised to protect and display this heritage, which includes items that survived the repeated earthquakes affecting the region and the disruptions of the early modern period. The cathedral itself was begun in the 13th century on the site of an earlier church and Roman remains, whose mosaic pavement is still visible in the crypt.
What you see
The museum collections include medieval and Renaissance painted panels, embroidered vestments, silver and gilt liturgical objects including chalices and reliquaries, illuminated manuscripts and choir books. Archaeological material from excavations beneath the cathedral — including Roman mosaic fragments — documents the long pre-Christian occupation of the site. The setting within the cathedral precinct allows visitors to contextualise the objects within the architectural history of the building itself.
Cultural significance
The Capitular Museum of Atri constitutes one of the principal repositories of ecclesiastical heritage in Abruzzo and is especially important for the study of medieval and Renaissance goldsmithing and textile production in central Italy. Its holdings document a diocesan tradition stretching back to the early Christian era in a town whose historical fame rests on its connection to the Roman imperial family of Hadrian.
