City of Science of Naples

The Città della Scienza (City of Science) is a large interactive science museum and cultural campus on the western waterfront of Naples, in the Bagnoli district. Opened in 1996 in the regenerated buildings of a former steelworks, it offers hands-on exhibits on science, natural phenomena, human biology and sustainable technology, alongside a dedicated children’s science centre (the Corporea Bioexperience). The complex also hosts science festivals, conferences and entrepreneurship activities promoting green innovation in a neighbourhood that has undergone significant post-industrial regeneration.

Overview

Città della Scienza occupies a dramatic waterfront site in Bagnoli, a western suburb of Naples that spent most of the twentieth century as a heavy-industry zone. Since 1996 the campus has been transformed into one of Italy’s leading science communication centres, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. It promotes scientific literacy through experiential learning, with exhibits on physics, chemistry, human biology, astronomy and environmental sustainability.

History

The site was originally occupied by the Italsider steelworks, which operated from the late nineteenth century until the complex closed in 1990. The Fondazione IDIS – Città della Scienza led the conversion of the industrial buildings into a science park, opening the museum to the public in 1996. A severe arson attack on 4 March 2013 destroyed much of the main museum building. The campus was progressively rebuilt and expanded, with Corporea — Italy’s first permanent biomedical exhibition — opening in 2017 in a striking new building.

What you see

Corporea is the flagship exhibition: a fully immersive journey through the human body spread across 3,000 square metres, with interactive stations on organs, the senses, genetics and nutrition aimed at both children and adults. Outdoor areas include an astronomical observatory and Science Square, an open waterfront plaza used for events and film screenings. Temporary exhibitions regularly bring international science shows to the city.

Cultural significance

Città della Scienza is a landmark in the urban renewal of Naples’ western coast and a symbol of the city’s post-industrial transformation. It serves as southern Italy’s primary centre for science communication and has earned recognition as one of Europe’s more innovative science museums for its community-engagement approach and its resilient rebuilding after the 2013 arson attack.
