Ratusha
Ukraine’s sole Art Deco town hall, rebuilt in the 1920s on foundations laid when the city itself was founded, now a regional museum with sweeping views from its observation deck.
At a glance
Ratusha dominates Market Square in Ivano-Frankivsk’s Old Town. Originally erected in the 17th century, the building was redesigned and reconstructed during the 1920s in the Art Deco idiom by Polish architect Stanisław Trela. It served as the town hall (ratusz in Polish, Rathaus in German) before becoming a museum and public viewing platform.
History
The original structure rose when Ivano-Frankivsk was established in the 17th century. Following centuries of service as the civic administrative seat, the building underwent radical modernization in the 1920s. Polish architect Stanisław Trela oversaw the redesign, transforming it into an Art Deco landmark while preserving its role at the heart of the city. It ceased functioning as a town hall and reopened as the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional History, Crafts and Culture Museum.
What you see
The building rises several stories in the Art Deco style, a movement that emphasizes geometric forms and decorative detail. Most striking is its plan: viewed from above, the structure echoes the shape of the Polish order of Virtuti Militari (Military Valor), a symbolic gesture by its designer. The observation deck affords panoramic perspective over the city and its central square.
Cultural significance
Ratusha holds unique status as Ukraine’s only town hall constructed in the Art Deco style. Its architectural fusion—combining 17th-century foundations with 1920s modernist design—reflects the layered history of central European urbanism. The homage to Polish heraldry in its floor plan underscores the region’s complex cultural heritage during the interwar period.
