La Tenuta di Ghizzano
La Tenuta di Ghizzano is a historic wine estate set in the rolling hills of the Pisan countryside near the medieval hamlet of Ghizzano, in the municipality of Peccioli. Owned by the Venerosi Pesciolini family since the late Middle Ages, the tenuta combines centuries-old agricultural tradition with contemporary biodynamic winemaking, and its manor house and cellars sit within a landscape of cypress alleys, olive groves, and vineyards typical of inland Tuscany.

Overview
La Tenuta di Ghizzano occupies land that has been farmed by the same noble family for over seven hundred years, making it one of the oldest continuously operated agricultural estates in Tuscany. The property extends across vineyards, olive groves, and woodland on the gently undulating terrain between the Arno valley and the Colline Pisane. Today the estate is known both as a producer of quality Tuscan wines and as an example of responsible land stewardship within the regional heritage landscape.
History
The Venerosi Pesciolini family, a branch of the ancient Pisan aristocracy, acquired and consolidated the Ghizzano estate during the medieval period, establishing the manor as the administrative centre of their rural landholdings. The property weathered the political changes of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, the Risorgimento, and the upheavals of the twentieth century while retaining its agricultural vocation. In recent decades the family has transitioned the vineyards to certified organic and biodynamic practices, positioning Ghizzano as a forward-looking estate that honours its historical roots.
What you see
Visitors approaching the estate pass through a classic Tuscan avenue of cypresses before reaching the historic manor house, whose stone façade reflects the sober elegance of Pisan rural architecture. The working cellars, partly housed in historic farm buildings, contain both traditional terracotta vessels and modern temperature-controlled tanks. The surrounding landscape, with its patchwork of vines and silver-leafed olive trees set against the pale hills, offers a composition that has changed little in its essential character over centuries.
Cultural significance
As a property maintained by the same family for more than seven centuries, La Tenuta di Ghizzano represents a rare continuity of ownership and land management in the Tuscan countryside. The estate contributes to the preservation of the historic rural landscape of the Colline Pisane, a territory characterised by medieval hilltop villages, scattered farms, and traditional polyculture. Its commitment to biodynamic agriculture connects ancient stewardship values with contemporary environmental awareness.
