Overview
Castello Brown is a historic house museum located above the harbour of Portofino, in northern Italy. The site has been used for military defence since Roman times, and as a Genoese coastal fort it was once called the Castello di San Giorgio. Today the castle and its gardens are open to visitors as one of the most photographed landmarks on the Ligurian coast.
History
The promontory above Portofino has been fortified since antiquity, exploiting its commanding views over the small harbour and the approaches to the Gulf of Tigullio. The Genoese Republic reinforced the site in the medieval period, building the coastal stronghold known as the Castello di San Giorgio to protect the inlet from pirate raids and rival maritime powers. In the nineteenth century the castle was purchased by the British consul Montague Yeats-Brown, whose family gave it its current name. Subsequent owners renovated the interiors in a Romantic style, adding terraced gardens that survive today.
What you see
Visitors approach the castle along a steep path from Portofino’s harbour square, emerging onto terraced gardens planted with Mediterranean species and offering sweeping views of the colourful village below and the open sea beyond. The interior of the castle preserves period furnishings and décor from its nineteenth-century residential phase, giving a sense of the genteel life once lived by its Anglo-Italian owners. Exhibition spaces host temporary cultural shows throughout the year.
Cultural significance
Castello Brown is an emblem of Portofino’s transformation from a fishing village into one of Europe’s most celebrated luxury destinations, a process driven in part by the arrival of British and northern European aristocrats in the nineteenth century. The castle and its gardens are a protected cultural asset within the Portofino Marine Protected Area and the Portofino Regional Nature Park.
