Castle of Santa Margherita Ligure
The castle of Santa Margherita Ligure is a medieval fortification overlooking the Ligurian Riviera di Levante, built to defend the small coastal town from seaborne raids. Situated on a promontory above the harbour, the structure preserves its original tower and curtain walls and offers striking views over the Gulf of Tigullio, with Portofino and the Portofino Regional Nature Park visible across the water.

Overview
Santa Margherita Ligure is a coastal town in the Metropolitan City of Genoa, located approximately 35 kilometres southeast of Genoa in the area traditionally known as the Tigullio Gulf. Part of the municipal territory falls within the Regional Natural Park of Portofino. The castle stands as one of the most prominent historical landmarks of the town, a reminder of the centuries when Ligurian coastal settlements required constant military protection.
History
The fortification of Santa Margherita Ligure developed in response to the endemic piracy and rivalry between maritime powers that defined the medieval Ligurian coast. The site was reinforced multiple times under Genoese rule, with the tower and circuit walls that survive today largely dating from the medieval and early modern periods. The castle guarded the town’s harbour against raids from North African corsairs as well as competing Italian city-states. After the decline of maritime threats in the eighteenth century, the structure lost its purely military role and gradually became part of the urban fabric of the growing resort town.
What you see
The castle consists of a square tower and associated curtain walls positioned on a rocky headland above the seafront promenade. The masonry construction is characteristic of Genoese military architecture, with limestone walls of considerable thickness designed to resist artillery bombardment. From the castle’s elevated position, visitors have panoramic views over the harbour, the pastel-coloured buildings of the town centre, and the open Ligurian Sea stretching toward Portofino. The surrounding area retains the character of an old Ligurian fishing quarter.
Cultural significance
The castle is an integral part of the historical identity of Santa Margherita Ligure, which developed from a small fishing village into a fashionable resort during the nineteenth century without entirely losing its medieval character. Together with the nearby Portofino Regional Nature Park and the celebrated Portofino promontory, it forms part of one of the most culturally and naturally significant stretches of the Italian Riviera.
