Overview

The Piedicastello Galleries occupy two parallel road tunnels that once served vehicular traffic beneath the Doss Trento hill on the western bank of the Adige river. Converted into a cultural venue, the long vaulted spaces create a distinctive atmosphere for immersive historical displays. The galleries have become one of Trento’s principal sites for large-scale temporary exhibitions on Trentino’s modern and contemporary history.

History

The tunnels were originally engineered to ease road traffic through the northern approach of Trento, bypassing the steep Doss Trento promontory that rises beside the Adige. When transport needs changed and the tunnels were decommissioned, the Fondazione Museo Storico del Trentino identified their potential as an unusual exhibition venue. The conversion respected the raw concrete and stone structure of the tunnels, allowing the industrial character to become part of the visitor experience. Since their cultural inauguration, the galleries have hosted exhibitions on topics ranging from the First World War on the Trentino front to themes of migration, memory, and regional identity.

What you see

Visitors enter two parallel tunnels, each several hundred metres long, with arched concrete ceilings and controlled lighting that focuses attention entirely on the exhibited objects and panels. The stripped-back aesthetic — bare walls, directional spotlights — creates a reflective, gallery-like atmosphere unusual for a regional history museum. Signage and installations are typically bilingual in Italian and German, reflecting Trentino’s dual cultural heritage. The space can accommodate very large photographic prints, documentary archives, and three-dimensional artefacts simultaneously.

Cultural significance

The galleries serve as a key public memory institution for Trentino, a region whose 20th-century history — marked by Austro-Hungarian rule, two World Wars, and annexation to Italy — is particularly layered. By embedding historical exhibitions in repurposed infrastructure, the Fondazione Museo Storico del Trentino has created a space that literally surrounds visitors in the built legacy of the past. The venue has received recognition as an innovative model of adaptive reuse within the Italian museum sector.
