Overview
The Civic Museum of Erba occupies the Villa Crevenna, a patrician residence that embodies the refined taste of 18th-century Lombard aristocracy in the Brianza district. Situated about 10 km east of Como and 40 km north of Milan, Erba lies at the junction of two valleys — the Valle del Lambro and the Valle d’Intelvi — giving it strategic importance since Roman times. The municipal administration transformed the villa into a public museum to preserve and display the rich cultural heritage of the local territory.
History
The Villa Crevenna was built in the 18th century as a summer retreat for a noble Lombard family, following the widespread custom among Milanese patricians of establishing elegant country residences in the Brianza hills. The estate passed through various ownerships before being acquired by the municipality of Erba, which undertook restoration works to adapt the interiors for museum use. The institution was inaugurated as a civic museum to serve the local community and to safeguard finds unearthed during archaeological surveys of the surrounding territory.
What you see
The museum collections span several disciplines housed within the villa’s period rooms. Archaeological galleries display finds from prehistoric settlements, Roman-era artefacts, and medieval objects recovered from the Erba area. Natural history sections present geological specimens, local fauna, and botanical collections that reflect the biodiversity of the Brianza and Prealps environment. Decorative arts and historical documents round out the permanent display, offering a comprehensive portrait of Erba’s development from antiquity to the 19th century.
Cultural significance
As the principal civic cultural institution of Erba, the museum plays a central role in local identity and heritage education, hosting school programmes and temporary exhibitions. The Villa Crevenna itself is an architectural landmark of Lombard neoclassical taste, representing the prosperity that the Brianza silk and textile trades brought to the region during the 18th and 19th centuries.
