Visitor Center Valpelline — Cooperativa Fontine
The Visitor Center of the Cooperativa Fontine is a heritage and agri-food interpretation centre located in the village of Valpelline, in the autonomous Aosta Valley of northwestern Italy. Dedicated to the ancient practice of fontina cheese-making — one of Italy’s oldest DOP products — it introduces visitors to the pastoral landscapes, mountain cooperatives, and centuries-old dairy traditions that have shaped the Valle del Gran San Bernardo. The cooperative has operated since the mid-twentieth century as the backbone of local alpine agriculture.

Overview
The Cooperativa Fontine di Valpelline gathers mountain dairy farmers from the Valle del Gran San Bernardo, uniting their production under the protected DOP denomination of Fontina. The visitor centre brings the full journey of the cheese — from alpine pasture to cave-ripened wheel — into public view, combining tasting rooms, interpretive exhibits, and direct cooperative sales. It is one of the most accessible entry points in the Aosta Valley for understanding traditional mountain food culture.
History
Fontina cheese production in the Aosta Valley is documented as far back as the thirteenth century, with the first certain written reference appearing in 1477 in the accounts of the Fénis castle. The Cooperativa Fontine was established in the mid-twentieth century to pool the resources of small-scale alpine farmers who faced increasing economic pressure after World War II. The cooperative structure enabled members to maintain traditional transhumance practices while meeting modern food-safety standards. Fontina received its DOP (Protected Designation of Origin) status from the European Union in 1996, cementing the geographic and cultural exclusivity of production within the Aosta Valley.
What you see
The visitor centre occupies a building in the alpine vernacular style typical of Valpelline, with stone walls and a wooden interior that evokes the traditional mountain dairy. Exhibits trace the transhumance calendar — the seasonal movement of cattle from valley floors to high-altitude pastures above 1,600 metres — alongside historical photographs and tools used in traditional cheese-making. A dedicated tasting area allows visitors to sample wheels at different stages of maturation. The cooperative shop sells Fontina and other valley products directly from producers.
Cultural significance
Fontina DOP is one of the defining cultural expressions of the Aosta Valley, linking landscape, climate, cattle breeds (Valdostana), and human skill into a living heritage product. The cooperative model itself represents a form of collective memory, preserving artisanal knowledge that would otherwise have been lost to industrial dairy production. The Valpelline visitor centre plays a key educational role for schools, food tourism circuits, and researchers interested in Alpine agri-food systems.
