GUM
Moscow’s iconic shopping center facing Red Square has served as a commercial hub for over a century, adapting from imperial marketplace to Soviet state store to contemporary shopping destination.
At a glance
GUM is a large shopping center located in the Kitai-gorod area of Moscow, directly opposite Red Square. The building houses over 100 brands alongside cafes and restaurants, functioning today as a mixed-use retail and dining venue.
History
Before the 1920s, the site was known as the Upper Trading Rows (Verhnije torgovyje rjady), reflecting Moscow’s long tradition as a commercial center. The building was renamed GUM and became the principal department store of the Soviet Union, where the state served as the sole vendor throughout most of the Soviet period.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, GUM transformed once more, returning to its original function as a shopping mall with private retailers and international brands.
What you see
The structure retains its prominent position in the Kitai-gorod district, traditionally a commercial quarter of Moscow. Its architectural presence and location facing Red Square make it one of the city’s most recognizable commercial buildings.
Cultural significance
GUM represents Moscow’s evolving relationship with commerce and consumption. As the main department store across many Soviet republics and post-Soviet states, it symbolizes the shift from centralized state commerce to market-driven retail, embodying nearly a century of Russian economic and social change.
