History
Built in 1890 by the Oriental Railway, Sirkeci served as the eastern terminus of the legendary Orient Express—the world-famous passenger line that connected Paris and Istanbul from 1883 until 2009. For over a century, the station epitomized romance and imperial travel.
Railway service was suspended in March 2013 to facilitate construction of the Marmaray line. An underground station opened in October 2013, integrating with the new commuter rail crossing beneath the Bosphorus. The historic above-ground terminus reopened in February 2024 as part of the modernized T6 tramway and U3 rail line.

The station comprises four platforms: three above ground and one underground, serviced by seven tracks total (five above, two below). The restored structure retains its original character while accommodating contemporary transit infrastructure.
Historically, commuter trains to Halkalı departed from tracks 2, 3, and 4, while regional and international services—to Kapıkule, Edirne, Uzunköprü, and beyond to Bucharest, Sofia, and Belgrade—operated from tracks 1 and 5.

Sirkeci has transcended its functional role to become a symbol of Istanbul itself.
