Lumley Castle
A quadrangular fortress raised by a returning border-war hero in 1389, held by the same family for six centuries — and now a hotel with a reputation for ghosts.

Lumley Castle stands above the Lumley Park Burn near Chester-le-Street in County Durham, a four-square medieval castle turned country-house hotel. It has belonged to the Lumley family and their descendants, the Earls of Scarbrough, for more than six hundred years, and still belongs to the present Lord Scarbrough today.
History
Sir Ralph Lumley converted his family manor house into a castle in 1389, on returning from the border wars against Scotland. A veteran of the Battle of Otterburn in 1388, he was granted a licence by the Bishop of Durham to “crenellate” his home — to fortify it into the quadrangular castle that survives.
His own story ended badly: implicated in a plot against Henry IV, he was imprisoned and executed, and the estate was briefly forfeited before reverting to his grandson Thomas in 1421. The castle stayed in the family line for centuries. In 1976 it was leased and converted into a 73-bedroom hotel, while remaining in the ownership of the Earls of Scarbrough.

The castle is a classic quadrangular plan: four ranges around a central courtyard, with corner towers, built for defence in a still-contested border country.
Its position on the banks of the Lumley Park Burn, a tributary of the Wear, gave it both water and a natural line of protection.
Cultural significance
Lumley is a rare survival of a late-fourteenth-century northern castle continuously held by one family. Its story — a soldier’s reward, a traitor’s fall, six centuries of continuity — compresses the history of the Anglo-Scottish border into a single building.
