Morne Trois Pitons National Park
Dominica’s oldest national park protects a landscape of dramatic volcanic features, from boiling mud ponds to emerald pools, centred on a mountain whose name means ‘three peaks’.
At a glance
Morne Trois Pitons National Park spans a region of active volcanism in the heart of Dominica. The park encompasses geothermal wonders—boiling mud pools, small geysers, and the famous Boiling Lake—alongside forested gorges and crystalline pools that reflect the island’s geological dynamism and lush tropical character.
History
Established in July 1975, the park was Dominica’s first legally protected national park. Its international recognition came in 1997, when it was inscribed as a World Heritage Site, affirming the global importance of its geothermal and ecological features.
What you see
The park’s landscape is dominated by Morne Trois Pitons, the second-highest mountain in Dominica at over 1,300 metres. Within its boundaries lie the Valley of Desolation, where boiling mud ponds and small geysers demonstrate ongoing volcanic activity; the dramatic Boiling Lake, a flooded fumarole; Titou Gorge, a narrow ravine carved through volcanic rock; and Emerald Pool, a waterfall-fed basin of striking green water.
Cultural significance
The park represents both a scientific and natural treasure. Its active geothermal features offer rare insights into volcanic processes in the Eastern Caribbean, while the variety of ecosystems supports distinctive tropical flora and fauna adapted to extreme conditions.
