Overview
Castiglioncello sits on the Etruscan Coast south of Livorno, where a wooded headland meets the Tyrrhenian Sea. Its rocky inlets, sandy coves and umbrella pines give it the character of a classic Tuscan seaside town. Today it remains a popular summer destination within the comune of Rosignano Marittimo.
History
The settlement began as a modest coastal community and expanded in the nineteenth century as bathing tourism developed along the Tuscan coast. In this period it attracted artists and writers, and the surrounding landscape became associated with a circle of Tuscan painters. Villas and resort buildings gradually transformed the promontory into a fashionable retreat.
