Overview

Conegliano lies in the hills of the Veneto, roughly 30 kilometres by rail north of Treviso. As of 2017 its population numbered around 35,000. The town is the gateway to one of Italy’s most celebrated wine regions, the Prosecco hills between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene.

History

The town grew around a hilltop castle whose remains date to the 10th century. The site formerly belonged to the Bishop of Vittorio Veneto. Over the centuries Conegliano developed at the foot of its fortified hill, becoming an important market and wine-producing centre of the Veneto. In 2019 its surrounding hills gained worldwide recognition through UNESCO.

What you see

On the hill above the town stand the surviving outer walls of the medieval castle and a bell tower, which now houses a small museum. Below, the historic centre preserves arcaded streets and civic buildings. Beyond the town spread the steeply terraced vineyards of the Prosecco hills, the landscape recognised by UNESCO.

Cultural significance

Conegliano anchors the wine landscape of Le Colline del Prosecco di Conegliano e Valdobbiadene, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 7 July 2019. Its medieval castle and bell-tower museum preserve the town’s older history. Together they make Conegliano a focal point of Veneto heritage and viticulture.

Practical information

The castle’s bell tower houses a small museum; opening hours vary by season. The town centre and its wine institutions welcome visitors year-round. Check the official municipal and tourism websites for current hours and events before planning a visit.

Getting there

Conegliano is well connected by rail and lies about 30 kilometres north of Treviso on the line toward the Alps. Regional trains link it to Treviso, Venice and Udine. By road it is reached via the A27 motorway and regional routes through the Prosecco hills.
