Overview
La Salle is a town and comune in the Aosta Valley region of north-western Italy, known in the local Valdôtain dialect as La Sala. It lies in the upper part of the valley west of Aosta, on the approach to Courmayeur and Mont Blanc. The comune belongs to the region’s bilingual Alpine community.
History
La Salle developed as a settlement in the upper Aosta Valley, along the historic route running west toward the high passes of the western Alps. Like its neighbours, the area lay for centuries within the domains of the House of Savoy, whose influence shaped the valley’s culture and administration. Mountain farming and pasture sustained the community through its history.
What you see
The comune extends across the valley slopes in the upper Aosta Valley, surrounded by the high peaks that lead toward Mont Blanc. Scattered hamlets of traditional stone Alpine houses dot the hillsides above the Dora Baltea. The setting offers wide mountain views typical of the upper valley.
Cultural significance
As a comune of the Aosta Valley, La Salle shares in the region’s bilingual heritage and Alpine traditions. It forms part of the cultural landscape of the upper valley on the road to Mont Blanc.
