History

Tropea has ancient roots and grew through the medieval period into one of the principal centres of the Calabrian Tyrrhenian coast. Its historic core developed atop the sandstone cliffs overlooking the sea, a defensive and commanding position above the shoreline. Over the centuries the town accumulated noble palaces, churches and a layered urban fabric that survives in its old centre today.

What you see

The town centre sits on a cliff with belvederes overlooking the beaches and the Tyrrhenian Sea below. Its most iconic landmark is the sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Isola, a church set on a rocky promontory rising from the shore. Narrow streets, historic palaces and the cathedral fill the old town, while terraces look out toward Stromboli and the Aeolian Islands.

Cultural significance

As one of I Borghi più belli d’Italia, Tropea is recognised among Italy’s most beautiful villages and is a symbol of the Calabrian coast. Its dramatic clifftop setting, historic architecture and association with the famous red onion of Tropea have made it a leading cultural and tourist destination of southern Italy.
