Overview

Pisticci is a town and comune in the province of Matera, in the southern Italian region of Basilicata. It is the fourth most populous town in the region and the most populous in the province after Matera. The town is known for being the production site of Amaro Lucano, a renowned Italian liqueur.

History

Pisticci developed as a hill town in the Ionian hinterland of the Matera province, in a landscape of clay ridges typical of this part of Basilicata. The wider area has been settled since antiquity, close to the Magna Graecia coast. In modern times the town became closely associated with the production of Amaro Lucano, an herbal liqueur founded by the Vena family.

What you see

Pisticci is noted for its districts of white-washed houses arranged across the hillside, a distinctive sight among Basilicata’s towns. Its historic core sits above the surrounding clay valleys and farmland. The town’s layout reflects both its long settlement and its growth as a regional centre.

Cultural significance

As one of the largest towns of Basilicata and the production home of Amaro Lucano, Pisticci holds a notable place in the region’s cultural and economic identity. Its white-housed quarters and Ionian-hinterland setting make it a distinctive part of the Lucanian landscape.
