Overview
The Palazzo della Ragione is a medieval market hall, town hall and palace of justice in Padua. The upper floor was dedicated to the town and justice administration, while the ground floor still hosts the city’s historic covered market. The palace separates the two market squares of Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza dei Frutti, and is popularly called il Salone.
History
Built in the Middle Ages as the seat of Padua’s administration of justice — hence the name della Ragione, “of reason” — the palace combined civic government with commerce. Its great upper hall served the town’s magistrates, while trade continued in the squares and arcades below. Over the centuries it remained the symbolic and practical heart of civic Padua.
What you see
The building is dominated by its enormous upper hall, the Salone, one of the largest medieval halls of its kind. The ground floor preserves the historic covered market still in use today. Standing astride two squares, the palace is wrapped by arcades and market stalls, integrating it into the daily life of the city centre.
Cultural significance
The Palazzo della Ragione is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 2021 as “Padua’s fourteenth-century fresco cycles.” As a surviving medieval seat of civic justice and commerce, it stands among the most important civic monuments of the Veneto and continues to host its historic market.
Practical information
Opening hours for the upper hall vary by season, and the ground-floor market keeps its own schedule. Check official website or Padua tourist information before visiting.
Getting there
The palace is in the historic centre of Padua, between Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza dei Frutti. Padua is well connected by rail to Venice, Verona and Bologna, and the central squares are a short walk from the railway station. The city centre is largely pedestrian.
