Casa Fenoglio – La Fleur

A landmark Art Nouveau residence designed by engineer Pietro Fenoglio as both his studio and a manifesto of the liberty style sweeping through Turin in the early twentieth century.

At a glance

This four-storey house stands at the intersection of Corso Francia and Via Principi d’Acaja in the Cit Turin district, among a cluster of Art Nouveau buildings including Casa Maciotta and Palazzo della Vittoria. Fenoglio’s design synthesizes Belgian and French liberty aesthetics with meticulous attention to ornamental detail—every surface exalts the style he championed.

History

Built between 1902 and 1903, Casa Fenoglio–La Fleur emerged during Turin’s embrace of Art Nouveau, catalyzed by the 1902 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative Art held in the Valentino Park pavilions. Fenoglio intended the residence to function as his studio and personal declaration of the liberty movement. He occupied it briefly before selling to French businessman La Fleur, whose name became permanently attached to the building.

What you see

The facade demonstrates Fenoglio’s commitment to total design: ornamental floral friezes cloak the entire exterior, while wrought-iron balconies articulate each level with sculptural grace. A splendid polychrome glass window punctuates the composition—one of many details that subordinate mere structure to artistic expression. The interiors retain their period character and craftsmanship.

Cultural significance

Casa Fenoglio–La Fleur ranks among Italy’s most important Art Nouveau buildings. Its international recognition stems not from innovation alone, but from Fenoglio’s rigorous integration of liberty principles into every architectural element—transforming a private residence into a statement of aesthetic conviction that influenced the broader development of modernist design in Italy.
