Cascata delle Marmore
One of Europe’s highest waterfalls, controlled by hydroelectric gates, plunges 165 metres through three dramatic leaps in the Valnerina valley near Terni.
At a glance
The Cascata delle Marmore is a managed waterfall system located 7.5 kilometres from Terni, in the heart of the Valnerina—the long valley carved by the Nera River. With a total drop of 165 metres divided into three distinct stages, it ranks among Europe’s tallest waterfalls. The name derives from calcium carbonate deposits on the rocks, which resemble white marble.
History
The waterfall is formed by the Velino River, which flows from Lake Piediluco near the village of Marmore before plunging into the gorge below. The cascade’s water is harnessed for hydroelectric power generation—normally only about 30 per cent of the Velino’s average flow of 50 cubic metres per second is diverted to the waterfall, meaning the falls do not operate at full capacity continuously.
What you see
The waterfall’s power is controlled by regulation gates; an acoustic signal announces their opening, and within minutes the flow builds to its characteristic thundering appearance. At minimum flow, exposed rocks and vegetation become visible beneath the cascade. The site sits within a large natural park traversed by several marked trails connecting the upper and lower viewpoints. Modern LED lighting illuminates the falls at night, providing uniform illumination across the entire drop.
Cultural significance
The Cascata delle Marmore forms part of the Nera River park system and represents a striking intersection of natural beauty and modern engineering. The managed water flow—a necessity for power generation—has become integral to the visitor experience, transforming the falls into a kind of natural spectacle with scheduled performances.
