Villa Ferramosca Cantarella

A Palladian-inspired country residence built in 1620 for a noble Venetian family, set amid the vineyards and castles of the Berici hills near Vicenza.

At a glance

Villa Ferramosca Cantarella stands in the heart of the Berici hills, a landscape of rolling terrain studded with historic villas, castles, and wine estates. Built by a student of Andrea Palladio for the aristocratic Counts Ferramosca, the villa exemplifies the Venetian country house tradition of the early seventeenth century. The property commands views across this culturally rich region and continues to operate as a residential venue.

History

Constructed in 1620, the villa was commissioned by the Counts Ferramosca, a prominent Venetian aristocratic family seeking a country retreat in the Berici hills. Its architect was a pupil of Andrea Palladio, whose influence shaped domestic architecture throughout the Veneto during this period. The villa has been recently restored, preserving its character while adapting its spaces for modern use.

What you see

The villa retains its typical Venetian terrace and is furnished with period antiques. The ground floor spans 500 square meters and centers on a large hall suited for events, surrounded by four rooms including a dining room accommodating twelve guests, an equipped kitchen, and a spacious underground cellar. The first floor contains four bedrooms—three with double beds and one with twin beds—along with three bathrooms and a cloakroom with relaxation and reading areas. The attic houses a billiard table and additional leisure space, offering varied accommodation and entertainment options.

Cultural significance

The villa represents the enduring influence of Palladio’s architectural principles on Venetian villa culture. Built during the height of the Counter-Reformation, it embodies the taste and economic power of the Venetian nobility who invested in country estates as symbols of status and refinement. The Berici region itself is celebrated for its concentration of Renaissance and early modern villas set within one of Italy’s premier wine-producing landscapes.
