Villa Duodo
A Venetian nobleman’s residence built upon a medieval castle, extended across three centuries with chapels marking a devotional pilgrimage route up the hillside.
At a glance
Villa Duodo crowns Colle della Rocca, a composition of residential wings and sacred structures that blend fortress heritage with Renaissance refinement. The complex spans the 16th to 18th centuries and remains a landmark of Monselice’s spiritual and aristocratic past.
History
The Duodo family, prominent Venetian nobles, built their villa on the foundations of the ancient castle of San Giorgio. Architect Vincenzo Scamozzi designed the oldest residential wing in 1593, establishing the estate’s architectural character. The front section was added in 1740, modernizing the complex while preserving its medieval roots.
Scamozzi also designed a jubilee sanctuary for the Duodo counts in the first half of the 1600s, a series of chapels ascending the hill in devotional sequence.
What you see
The 1593 wing, attributed to Scamozzi, represents the villa’s foundational design. The 18th-century front addition introduces later architectural taste. To the left stands an exedra dedicated to Saint Francis Xavier, paired with a substantial stone staircase dating from the 1600s.
The sanctuary comprises six chapels arranged along the slope, culminating in the church of San Giorgio on the esplanade. This processional arrangement transforms the hillside into a path of spiritual stations.
Cultural significance
Villa Duodo represents the synthesis of military heritage and Renaissance aspiration characteristic of Venetian patrician estates. The jubilee sanctuary demonstrates the Counter-Reformation’s investment in pilgrimage devotion, while Scamozzi’s hand links the villa to one of the era’s most influential architects.
The Seven Churches path remains a defining feature of Monselice’s topography and religious identity.
