Arcipelago di Revillagigedo (sito naturale): un santuario marino nel Pacifico
A centinaia di chilometri dalla costa messicana, quattro isole vulcaniche emergono dal Pacifico aperto: Revillagigedo. The Revillagigedo Archipelago, four volcanic islands and their surrounding waters in the open Pacific far off the west coast of Mexico, is a marine sanctuary of global importance. The islands — the largest being Socorro — are the visible peaks of undersea volcanoes, with their own endemic land species, but it is the rich ocean around them that is most remarkable: a gathering place for sharks, giant manta rays, dolphins, humpback whales and great schools of fish. Often called the “Galápagos of Mexico”, it was inscribed by UNESCO in 2016.

History
The islands of Revillagigedo emerged from the Pacific as volcanoes, far from any continent, and so developed their own endemic land life while remaining almost uninhabited. Their isolation and the converging ocean currents make the surrounding waters extraordinarily rich, drawing large marine animals from across the eastern Pacific.
Long valued by divers for encounters with giant mantas and sharks, the archipelago was given strong protection by Mexico, which declared a vast marine reserve around the islands. Recognised for this exceptional marine biodiversity, Revillagigedo was inscribed by UNESCO in 2016.
What you see
The archipelago is visited almost entirely by liveaboard dive boats: beneath the surface, divers encounter friendly giant manta rays, several species of shark, dolphins and, in winter, the songs and presence of humpback whales, amid clouds of fish around the volcanic pinnacles. The islands themselves, rugged and mostly off-limits, host endemic birds.
The chance to swim among great ocean animals in the open Pacific is the wonder of Revillagigedo.

Getting there
The Revillagigedo Islands lie in the Pacific about 390 km south-west of the tip of Baja California, Mexico. They are reached by liveaboard boats, mainly from Cabo San Lucas. GPS: 18.79° N, 110.95° W.
