Langhe

A rolling landscape of hills in Piedmont, spanning the provinces of Cuneo and Asti, designated a UNESCO World Heritage property for its distinctive terrain and ecological significance.

At a glance

The Langhe constitute an extensive hilly system in Piedmont’s southwest, bounded by four rivers: the Tànaro, Belbo, Bòrmida di Millesimo and Bòrmida di Spigno. The territory borders three complementary wine regions—the Astesana, Monferrato and Roero—creating a landscape shaped by centuries of viticulture and natural geography.

History

On 22 June 2014, during the 38th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Doha, the Langhe were officially inscribed together with Roero and Monferrato, recognizing the exceptional cultural and natural value of this Piedmontese landscape.

What you see

The terrain varies markedly across the Langhe. Higher elevations host Scots pine—a botanical relic of the last glacial period—though these ancient trees survive in diminishing numbers. The Alba plain experiences warm summers, with temperatures frequently exceeding 30°C. Upper Langhe terrain carries an Apennine climate tempered by Padan influences, while lower areas display a milder Po climate.

Cultural significance

The Langhe landscape embodies the interplay between human agricultural tradition and natural ecology. Its hills support renowned vineyard cultivation, while its preserved vegetation patterns offer insight into regional climate history and post-glacial ecology.
