Monastero di Bose, Parish Church of Cellole
A Romanesque church in the Valdelsa hills, now home to an ecumenical monastic community renowned for hospitality.
At a glance
The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta in Cellole stands four kilometers from San Gimignano, within the rolling landscape of Valdelsa. Professor Antonio Paolucci has described it as “one of the most important Romanesque churches dating back to the XII century existing in the territory.” The site lies near one of the historic hilltop routes of the Via Romea / Francigena pilgrimage road.
History
Archaeological remains and the church’s name—derived from the Etruscan cela, meaning “small sacred place”—point to Etruscan origins of the earliest settlements at Cellole. The Romanesque church itself dates to the twelfth century. Originally a parish church under the diocese of Volterra, alongside Libbiano, the complex evolved as successive buildings were constructed around the original church nucleus over subsequent centuries.
What you see
The architectural ensemble comprises the Romanesque church at its center, surrounded by a series of structures built over time. These buildings enclose a courtyard, bounded by a wall punctuated by a single doorway. The composition reflects the organic growth typical of medieval monastic and parish complexes, where functional spaces accumulated around the sacred core.
Cultural significance
Cellole represents an important example of Romanesque ecclesiastical architecture in the Valdelsa region. Its Etruscan-period origins connect the site to pre-Christian settlement patterns, while its medieval development mirrors the Christianization of the Tuscan landscape and the role of parish churches as community anchors along pilgrimage routes.
