Royal Museums of Turin

A unified museum complex integrating the city’s principal royal collections—from the Palace and Gardens to the Galleria Sabauda, Archaeological Museum, and newly restored Roman Theater of ancient Augusta Taurinorum.

At a glance

The Royal Museums of Turin represent a coordinated institutional framework established in 2016 to manage and present Turin’s most significant royal and archaeological heritage. The complex brings together eight distinct sites and collections across the historic city center, making it one of Italy’s major cultural destinations. In its inaugural year, it ranked among the country’s most visited state museums.

History

Formerly organized as the Royal Pole, these collections evolved over centuries as the residence and repositories of the House of Savoy. The integration of the Roman Theater—discovered in 1899 during work on the Manica Lunga wing of the Royal Palace—completes the historical narrative from the city’s Roman foundation as Augusta Taurinorum through the early modern period. The theater itself dates to the Augustan age and underwent successive modifications in the 1st century AD before demolition in the 4th century for material reuse.

After comprehensive restoration beginning in 2019, the Roman Theater reopened to the public in 2021, with structural work directed by architect Filippo Masino in collaboration with the Superintendence.

What you see

The Royal Palace anchors the complex with its palatial rooms and decorated interiors. The adjoining Royal Gardens provide landscaped grounds for contemplation and rest. The Galleria Sabauda houses paintings and sculptures from the royal collection. The Archaeological Museum displays artifacts spanning centuries of occupation.

The Roman Theater presents excavated remains of the cavea (seating), backstage portico, and surrounding walls—all carefully consolidated and freed of vegetation. New reversible flooring and evening illumination allow the structure to host contemporary performances while preserving its archaeological integrity.

Cultural significance

The Royal Museums encapsulate Turin’s dual identity as both a Baroque capital of the Savoy dynasty and an ancient Roman city. The unified presentation of royal art, decorative traditions, and urban archaeology offers visitors insight into dynastic power and cultural continuity across two millennia.
