Villa Rey
An 18th-century villa in Turin’s hillside vineyard region, now headquarters of Italy’s historic motoring federation.
At a glance
Villa Rey stands among the characteristic “vineyards” (hillside residences built within vineyard areas) beyond the Po river in the Montagna di Torino. Since 1966, it has served as the headquarters of the A.S.I. (Automotoclub Storico Italiano), Italy’s national federation dedicated to historic vehicles and motoring heritage.
History
The villa passed through the hands of several prominent Turinese families, including the Turinetti of Priero, the Carron, and finally the Rey family, whose name it bears. The architect Mario Ludovico Quarini (1736–1800) contributed significantly to the building’s design and construction. In 1966, the A.S.I. was founded and established the villa as its institutional seat. By presidential decree in 1980, the organization gained recognition as a moral body under private law, cementing its role in representing Italian historic motoring nationally and internationally.
What you see
The villa retains the architectural character typical of Piedmontese hillside residences. Quarini’s work on the building reflects 18th-century neoclassical principles. The property includes both the main residence and surrounding grounds, adapted over time to serve the federation’s administrative functions.
Cultural significance
Villa Rey serves as the institutional heart of Italian historic vehicle culture. The A.S.I. federation, comprising 281 federated clubs and 46 member clubs, brings together approximately 202,000 enthusiasts and technically represents Italian historic motoring across national and international forums. The organization certifies historic vehicles based on rigorous authenticity standards—over 45,000 vehicles currently hold A.S.I. certificates, with annual growth of roughly 3,000 additions. These certified vehicles benefit from special tax advantages and insurance privileges, recognition of their historical and cultural value under Italian law.
