Galleria Vittoria

A contemporary art gallery founded by Enrico and Tiziana Todi on Via Margutta, Rome’s historic artists’ street, championing Italian and international artists since the 1970s.

At a glance

Galleria Vittoria occupies a centuries-old workshop on Via Margutta, one of Rome’s most storied artistic neighborhoods. The space has hosted exhibitions by major twentieth-century artists—from Man Ray and Salvador Dalí to Andy Warhol—alongside emerging contemporary voices. It remains a working gallery dedicated to direct, non-formal collaboration between artist and patron.

History

Enrico Todi began as a frequent visitor to his uncle Guglielmo Magnani’s metalwork and gilding shop in the 1950s, which became his base as a collector and art promoter. During the 1970s, Todi established an informal cenacle of artists and collectors in a living room on Via Vittoria. In 1974, he and his daughter Tiziana transformed this space into Galleria Vittoria, opening with an exhibition by sculptor Pericle Fazzini. Two years later, they relocated to their uncle’s historic workshop at Via Margutta 103, where the gallery remains today. The building itself celebrated a century of artistic activity in 2006.

What you see

The gallery inhabits an ancient workshop designed as a living, working space rather than a formal showroom. Exhibition areas alternate between displays of contemporary works and presentations of historical masters. The intimate scale and authentic workshop setting emphasize direct encounter between visitor, artwork, and gallery proprietors—a deliberate rejection of conventional gallery distance.

Cultural significance

Galleria Vittoria exemplifies a distinctive model of art patronage centered on human relationship and trust rather than commercial transaction. Its programming has traced the full arc of twentieth-century modernism—from historical avant-gardes through the postwar European and American movements to contemporary practice. The gallery’s international reach, evident in exhibitions worldwide and collaborations in Tokyo, New York, Paris, and Shanghai, has established it as a bridge between Roman artistic tradition and global contemporary discourse. Recent initiatives like “Shopping-Bag-Art” demonstrate its commitment to accessible, participatory approaches to cultural dissemination.
