Montalbano Elicona
A medieval village in the Messina hinterland, celebrated for its fortress and urban harmony. Named Italy’s most beautiful village in 2015.
At a glance
Montalbano Elicona crowns a hillside in eastern Sicily with a dense medieval core dominated by a castle. Once the summer seat of King Frederick II of Aragon, the town retains the layered character of its feudal past. Its recognition as one of Italy’s most beautiful villages reflects both architectural integrity and the preservation of its historic streetscape.
History
Evidence of settlement dates to the 11th century, when the site was state property. In 1232, the village rebelled against Frederick II of Swabia, aligning itself with papal interests alongside neighbouring centres. Over subsequent centuries, Montalbano passed through the hands of feudal lords: Matteo Palizzi held it in 1350, followed by Vinciguerra d’Aragona (1359), the De Sidot family (1396), the Romano Colonna, and the Bonannos (from 1587). This succession of noble families shaped the settlement’s fortifications and urban layout.
What you see
The castle dominates the medieval quarter, its stone walls and towers rising above the compact town below. Narrow streets wind between residential buildings that preserve the proportions and materials of earlier centuries. The harmony of the urban fabric—a blend of domestic architecture, defensive structures, and civic spaces—distinguishes the borgo from surrounding areas.
Cultural significance
In April 2015, Montalbano Elicona was awarded the title “Borgo dei Borghi” (Village of Villages), joining Italy’s exclusive association of small centres recognized for artistic, cultural and historical merit. The honour acknowledges the settlement’s capacity to balance heritage preservation with liveable conditions for residents—a rare achievement in rural Sicily.
