Prague Castle

Prague Castle

Dominating one of Prague’s nine hills, this sprawling fortress encompasses nearly 70,000 square meters and ranks as the world’s largest single-body castle. For over a millennium, it has served as the seat of Czech power and spiritual authority.

At a glance

Prague Castle rises above the city’s Hradčany district, its footprint spanning roughly the size of seven football fields. Originally built from wood, the fortress underwent successive transformations in stone, incorporating Romanesque churches, royal residences, and defensive structures that reflect the ambitions of successive rulers.

History

The first stone structure appeared in 884 AD: a church dedicated to the Virgin, commissioned by Borivoj I, Bohemia’s first Christian prince. Only foundations survive today. The Romanesque period saw substantial construction, including the convent and basilica of San Giorgio, the Royal Palace, and fortified towers. St. Wenceslas later built a rotunda to house relics of San Vito, which evolved into the city’s cathedral—establishing Prague Castle as both administrative and sacred center.

What you see

Visitors encounter layered architectural periods within the castle’s vast precincts. Romanesque basilicas stand alongside medieval royal chambers and defensive ramparts. The evolution from timber to stone construction marks the fortress’s progression from early medieval settlement to unified architectural complex.

Cultural significance

Prague Castle represents the birthplace of Czech statehood and Christian identity. Its presence shaped urban development, making Hradčany the city’s ceremonial and administrative heart. The fortress remains a symbol of Czech sovereignty across centuries of political transformation.
