Villa Foscarini Rossi

A seventeenth-century Venetian villa along the Riviera del Brenta, now home to the Rossini Footwear Museum.

At a glance

Villa Foscarini Rossi stands in Stra, between Venice and Padua, on the scenic Riviera del Brenta waterway. Designed by the renowned architect Vincenzo Scamozzi for the noble Foscarini family, the villa exemplifies seventeenth-century Venetian grandeur. Following restoration, it now operates as the Rossini Footwear Museum, showcasing the heritage of the Rossini shoe company.

History

The Foscarini family commissioned Vincenzo Scamozzi to design this villa as a statement of their prominence and wealth. Scamozzi entrusted the frescoes and decorative schemes to accomplished artists including Pietro Liberi and Domenico de’ Bruni, whose work enriched the interior spaces. After significant restoration restored both the architecture and frescoes to their original condition, the villa was reopened to the public. In 1995, on the fiftieth anniversary of its founding, the Rossini shoe company, under the initiative of Luigino Rossi, established the Rossini Footwear Museum within the villa.

What you see

The villa displays the refined proportions and classical vocabulary characteristic of Scamozzi’s designs. Frescoed interiors by Liberi and de’ Bruni ornament the rooms with period decoration. The recent restoration has returned both the architectural features and frescoed surfaces to their historical appearance, allowing visitors to appreciate the quality of seventeenth-century Venetian craftsmanship.

Cultural significance

Villa Foscarini Rossi represents the tradition of Venetian villas built by noble families along the Brenta as retreats and displays of status. Scamozzi’s involvement places it within the broader context of late Renaissance architecture. The villa now serves a dual purpose: preserving an important architectural heritage while documenting the twentieth-century development of Italian footwear manufacturing through the Rossini company’s collections.
