Trento Railway Station
Angiolo Mazzoni gave Trento a station of coloured marble and a clock tower, finished in 1936 — inter-war monumentality crossed with the Futurism he had just joined.
At a glance
Trento’s railway station is one of the most complete works of Angiolo Mazzoni. Built between 1934 and 1936, it sets a long porticoed front of polychrome marble against a tall clock tower — a composition at once classical and modern, and one of the landmarks of Italian inter-war railway architecture.

History
Angiolo Mazzoni (Bologna 1894 – Rome 1979) was the chief architect-engineer of the Italian State Railways between the wars, designer of dozens of stations and post offices; in 1933 he joined the Futurist movement.
At Trento, between 1934 and 1936, Mazzoni produced one of his most resolved buildings: a low monumental block faced in coloured marble, with a porticoed entrance and a clock tower that signals the station across the city. The metalwork, lettering and lighting were all part of the design.
The station remains in use and is valued as a protected example of inter-war railway architecture.
What you see
The front is a long marble-clad portico, sober and symmetrical, set off by the vertical of the clock tower. The polychrome marble — a Mazzoni signature — gives the building its colour and weight.
Much of the original detailing, down to the fittings, survives.
