Stazione Trieste Campo Marzio

A restored railway station and museum housing a rare collection of rail heritage in Italy’s first station-museum, under the direction of Fondazione FS.

At a glance

The former FS (Italian State Railways) station of Trieste Campo Marzio represents a significant early twentieth-century example of Mitteleuropean railway architecture. Now designated Italy’s first station-museum, it houses a unique collection of railway artifacts and rolling stock, transformed into a cultural and tourism centre for railway heritage.

History

Built in the early 1900s as a working railway station, Campo Marzio served the Trieste rail network for decades. Fondazione FS developed plans to restore and reimagine the site as a museum, following the successful model established at the Museo Nazionale Ferroviario di Pietrarsa near Naples. Work began in 2018, with public opening targeted for 2020. The project forms part of a broader regional initiative to promote railway tourism throughout Friuli Venezia Giulia.

What you see

The station building exemplifies Mitteleuropean architectural design of the early twentieth century, with period details reflecting the cosmopolitan character of pre-war Trieste. The restored complex preserves the original station structure while accommodating exhibition and collection spaces for railway equipment and rolling stock, arranged to tell the story of rail transport’s development.

Cultural significance

As Italy’s first station-museum, Campo Marzio represents an innovative approach to heritage preservation, activating a historic transport building as a living cultural venue. The railway collection documents an essential chapter in Italian and Central European transport history, while the restored station building itself stands as testimony to early industrial-age design and Trieste’s role in the broader European rail network.
