MESSINA, SICILY

Messina

Sicily’s third-largest city commands the strait between the island and mainland Italy, serving as a vital Mediterranean crossroads shaped by conquest, disaster, and resilient reconstruction.

At a glance

Messina stands at Sicily’s northeastern extremity, its strategic position on the Strait of Messina making it Italy’s busiest passenger port and a crucial ferry terminal to the continent. The city ranks as Italy’s thirteenth largest municipality and the capital of its metropolitan region.

History

Founded as Zancle by Greek colonists, Messina—as it became known—flourished as Sicily’s first Greek settlement. Between the late Middle Ages and the mid-seventeenth century, the city rivaled Palermo for preeminence on the island.

Political upheaval marked the early modern period. A major anti-Spanish revolt in 1678 brought devastating reprisals that destroyed much of the ruling class. An earthquake in 1783 inflicted severe damage. During the 1848 Sicilian revolution against Ferdinand II of Bourbon, Messina was besieged and badly damaged again.

The catastrophe of 1908 proved most destructive. A disastrous earthquake nearly obliterated the city, killing approximately half the population. Reconstruction began in 1912, transforming Messina into a modern urban grid.

What you see

The rebuilt city displays orderly planning: wide, straight streets run north-south in a regular geometric pattern. This measured layout reflects early-twentieth-century urban design principles applied after total reconstruction.

Cultural significance

Messina’s importance transcends its role as a transport hub. The city hosted a prestigious university founded in 1548 by Saint Ignatius of Loyola, establishing it as an intellectual centre. Its archaeology and maritime heritage document Greek colonization and medieval Mediterranean commerce.
