MAM’S – Palazzo degli Scalzi
A museum dedicated to the G.B. Salvi International Art Review, housing one of the Marche region’s most significant collections of twentieth-century Italian and European art.
At a glance
MAM’S occupies a seventeenth-century palazzo in central Sassoferrato, serving as both museum and exhibition space. The collection comprises approximately 4,000 works assembled by the Review from 1945 to the present day, representing the largest holding of second-half twentieth-century art in the Marche region.
History
The G.B. Salvi Painting Prize began in 1951 as a local initiative to honor Salvi’s memory and sustain the town’s artistic tradition. What started as a regional exhibition quickly gained national prominence, becoming an essential platform for artists and critics. The Review has since produced 63 editions. On April 6, 2014, the museum was formally inaugurated within Palazzo degli Scalzi, transforming the prize’s accumulated collection into a permanent public institution.
What you see
The palazzo’s seventeenth-century structure provides the setting for a carefully curated survey of modern art. Alongside original artworks by figures including Merz, Rotella, Schifano, Castellani, Vedova, Capogrossi, Jean Fautrier, Anton Zoran Music and Graham Sutherland, the museum displays historical documentation tracing the Review’s evolution—including catalogs from all 63 editions, available both in print and digital formats online.
Cultural significance
The collection documents artistic developments across the European post-war period, reflecting the tastes and values of a respected cultural institution. The museum preserves not only individual masterworks but the history of a prize that shaped regional and national artistic discourse for more than seven decades.
