Euphrasian Basilica in the Historic Centre of Poreč

The Euphrasian Basilica in Poreč, on the western coast of the Istrian peninsula in Croatia, is an outstanding example of early Byzantine art and architecture, housing the best-preserved mosaic cycle in Europe outside Ravenna — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.

History

Christianity took early root at Poreč, then the Roman town of Parentium. The first oratory here dates to the early 4th century, making it among the oldest Christian sites in the Adriatic region. Bishop Eufrasius undertook a comprehensive reconstruction of the entire ecclesiastical complex in the mid-6th century, around 553-554 AD, during the Byzantine reconquest of Istria under Emperor Justinian I. His programme produced the apse mosaics, which remain among the finest Byzantine works outside Constantinople. The complex, including the atrium, baptistery, and bishop's palace, has survived largely intact. Poreč later passed under Venetian control, which accounts for the late medieval and Renaissance additions visible in the historic centre.

What to See

The apse mosaics of the Euphrasian Basilica are the primary draw: the central composition shows the Virgin and Child enthroned, flanked by angels and local martyrs, with Bishop Eufrasius himself depicted holding a model of the church. The golden tessera backgrounds and the quality of the figurative work are exceptional. The atrium columns with Byzantine capitals, the octagonal baptistery, and the episcopal palace annex complete the complex. Poreč's historic streets retain a Roman grid, medieval tower houses, Venetian Gothic facades, and a long seafront promenade.

Getting There

Poreč is on the western coast of Istria, 55 km from Pula Airport and 80 km from Trieste Airport. Regular bus services connect Poreč to Pula (1.5 hours), Rovinj, and Zagreb. Summer catamaran services run to Venice (2.5 hours) and Trieste.
