Frosinone

A historic city in southern Lazio, Frosinone has served as a regional hub since antiquity, though earthquakes and warfare have left few substantial monuments from its Volscian and Roman past.

At a glance

Frosinone is recognized as the capital of the Ciociaria region and functions as an important communication hub in southern Lazio. Today it is primarily an industrial and commercial center, yet its strategic location has given it significance across more than two millennia.

History

Known to the Volscians as Frusna, the settlement became the Roman city of Frùsino. Its position made it a target throughout history—it has endured repeated devastations and looting. The most severe damage came from seismic activity, particularly a catastrophic earthquake in 1350 that destroyed much of the city. These repeated calamities account for the scarcity of surviving ancient structures today.

What you see

Physical remains of Frosinone’s antiquity are modest. The most significant survival is the ruined amphitheater, a testament to its Roman importance. A funerary monument from the 2nd century stands in the locality of Sant’Angelo, offering further evidence of the city’s classical period.

Cultural significance

Though stripped of many architectural treasures, Frosinone preserves its historical importance as a crossroads of southern Lazio. The city’s archaeological museum houses artifacts that illuminate its Volscian and Roman phases, contributing to understanding of central Italian antiquity.
