Modena

An ancient Roman city transformed into a ducal capital, Modena preserves a medieval core of exceptional UNESCO-listed monuments and continues as a centre of military education and ecclesiastical authority.

At a glance

Modena is a city of layered history: Roman settlement, medieval religious and civic authority, Renaissance court capital, and 19th-century garrison town. Its heart—the Cathedral, Civic Tower, and Piazza Grande—earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 1997, recognising their architectural and urban significance across centuries.

History

The Roman triumvirs Marco Emilio Lepido, Tito Ebuzio Parro, and Lucio Quinzio Crispino founded Modena in 183 BC as a colony under Roman law. The settlement prospered as a crossroads and religious seat, eventually becoming an archbishopric and university centre of note.

From 1598 to 1859, Modena served as capital of the Duchy of Modena and Reggio, a period that shaped its architectural identity. By 1859, the Palazzo Ducale had become home to the Central Italian Military School of the Kingdom of Sardinia. This institution evolved into the Military Academy of the Army and of the Carabinieri in 1947, a role it maintains today.

What you see

The Piazza Grande forms the civic heart, anchored by the Cathedral and the Civic Tower—both medieval structures of enduring presence. The Cathedral represents centuries of religious architectural development, while the tower stands as a symbol of communal autonomy. The plaza itself embodies the ideals of medieval urban design, with proportions and spatial relationships refined through generations.

Cultural significance

Modena’s UNESCO designation reflects the exceptional quality of its medieval civic complex and its role in European urban history. The Cathedral and Tower represent pivotal expressions of Romanesque and Gothic architecture in the Emilia-Romagna region. Beyond monuments, Modena remains an active intellectual centre through its university and a centre of military tradition through the Academy.
