FOGGIA, PUGLIA

Foggia

Capital of its province and the third-largest municipality in Puglia, Foggia sits at the heart of the Tavoliere—Italy’s vast wheat-growing plain—with a name rooted in ancient legend and Latin etymology.

At a glance

Foggia is the capital of Foggia Province in Puglia and the third municipality in the region by population. It ranks second by area within Puglia and eighth nationally. The city is situated in the Tavoliere, traditionally Italy’s most productive cereal-growing region.

History

The etymology of Foggia likely derives from the Latin fovea, meaning “pit.” While often associated with the grain storage pits documented from the Angevin period—reflecting the region’s wheat cultivation—the term may also refer to a catchment area, possibly linked to the legendary discovery of an icon of the Nicopeian Madonna that features prominently in local tradition and the city coat of arms.

An alternative hypothesis connects the name to fire, relating it to the sanctuary of the Incoronata, formally known as Sancta Maria de Focis (“Santa Maria della Foce”), though this etymology remains less favored among scholars.

What you see

The Church of the Addolorata stands in the heart of the ancient village as a notable example of Apulian Baroque architecture, reflecting the region’s distinctive approach to Baroque design.

The Piano delle Fosse, described by poet Giuseppe Ungaretti as an “oval square that never ends,” presents a striking landscape of humps and dusty expanses that the poet felt deserved recognition as a national monument.

Cultural significance

Foggia embodies the identity of the Tavoliere, a landscape shaped by centuries of grain cultivation and tied to the economic life of southern Italy. The city’s mythological foundations—centered on the icon of the Nicopeian Madonna—reflect broader Mediterranean traditions found across Adriatic and Greek regions, making it a cultural crossroads.
