Church of San Gregorio dei Muratori
A rare oratory dedicated to the patron saint of masons, this intimate chapel preserves frescoes and a distinctive interior geometry shaped by its original urban setting.
At a glance
The Church of San Gregorio dei Muratori is a small oratory in Rome’s Campo Marzio district, originally built by the Confraternity of Masons in 1527. Now incorporated into an early 20th-century building, it remains an active place of worship with a Latinate liturgical tradition.
History
The oratory was constructed in 1527 by the Confraternity of the Masons as their chapel, dedicated to Gregory the Great, their patron saint. Its original location near the now-vanished Port of Ripetta connected it to Rome’s working waterfront and commercial life. The surrounding urban fabric transformed dramatically over the centuries, and in 1934 the chapel was absorbed into a newly constructed building. Today it is served by the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter, who celebrate the ancient Latin rite within its walls by papal permission.
What you see
The chapel’s most striking architectural feature is its unconventional proportions: the nave is wider than it is long, creating an unusual spatial experience. The exterior facade runs parallel to the nave rather than perpendicular to it, requiring the two entrance doors to open on the right side instead of the traditional rear entrance. Frescoes depicting scenes from the life of St. Gregory adorn the interior walls, enriched with stucco putti and gilding. The floor retains its original terracotta finish, a modest but authentic material choice typical of 16th-century Roman chapels.
Cultural significance
San Gregorio dei Muratori documents the devotional life of Rome’s craft guilds during the Renaissance. The Masons’ Confraternity, like many professional associations of the period, expressed collective identity and spiritual commitment through their oratory. The chapel’s preservation within modern urban fabric illustrates how historical sacred spaces adapt and endure within contemporary cities.
