England Hotel Rome

A storied palazzo near the Spanish Steps that has welcomed writers, monarchs and artists since its conversion to a hotel in 1845.

At a glance

The England Hotel occupies a Renaissance-era residence steps from Rome’s most celebrated landmarks: the Trevi Fountain, Villa Borghese, and the Roman Forum. Positioned on Via Bocca di Leone in the heart of the historic fashion district, the hotel commands one of the city’s most coveted addresses, adjacent to the luxury shopping streets of Via Borgognona and Via Frattina.

History

The building dates to the mid-16th century, when it served as a residence for guests of the Palazzo Torlonia across the street. By the 15th century, the neighbourhood had already earned renown for hosting the city’s finest lodgings and drawing foreign visitors and international communities.

In 1845, the palazzo was transformed into a hotel, capitalizing on its appeal to wealthy British travellers. The hotel became legendary among visiting writers and statesmen—among them Lord Byron, John Keats, Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway, and Elizabeth Taylor. Its guest registers chronicle a century and a half of cultural luminaries.

What you see

The interior design reflects the vision of Italian architect Alessandro Pasini, while furnishings were conceived by designer Roberto Terrinoni under the artistic direction of Countess Cristina Gotti Lega. From 2008 onward, systematic renovations reconfigured the floors, transforming 21 smaller rooms into 13 larger suites. Hand-blown Murano glass chandeliers, modern fabrics, and contemporary amenities now define the restored spaces, honouring the building’s historic fabric while meeting modern expectations.

Cultural significance

The England Hotel embodies Rome’s 19th-century cosmopolitan character, when the city attracted writers, artists and nobility from across Europe. Its preservation and careful modernization demonstrate the balance between conservation and contemporary hospitality in one of Europe’s most cherished capitals.
