Archaeo-Fluvial Site of Longola

A Bronze and Iron Age pile-dwelling settlement in the Sarno valley reveals sophisticated hydraulic engineering and maritime trade among an Oscan-origin people who mastered life on water.

At a glance

The Archaeo-Fluvial Site of Longola is the only known pile-dwelling settlement in the upper Sarno valley, discovered in 2000 during wastewater treatment plant construction. Inhabited from the late 15th century BC until abandonment in the 6th century BC, it offers rare archaeological evidence of Bronze and Iron Age settlement patterns in Campania.

History

The site was home to the Sarrasti, a people of Oscan origin who built their community on artificial islets in a Sarno river lagoon. Occupied across multiple centuries, from the Middle Bronze Age through the Iron Age, the settlement thrived until the late orientalizing period. The population eventually abandoned Longola, migrating to nearby developing cities of Pompeii and Nuceria that offered greater opportunity and security.

What you see

The village sprawled across approximately 7 hectares of artificially constructed islets, separated by channels bounded by wooden palisades that served dual purposes: water drainage and transport routes. Wooden huts with subrectangular plans and double-sloping roofs dotted each islet, typically containing a central hearth or domestic oven, with larger productive ovens positioned outside some structures.

Two oak canoes recovered from the site, one still laden with its original cargo, testify to river-based communication and trade. The waterlogged anaerobic environment has preserved organic materials—wooden structures, boat timbers, and defensive palisades—that normally deteriorate rapidly, offering extraordinary insight into daily life across centuries.

Cultural significance

Longola represents a unique settlement pattern for the region, contrasting sharply with contemporary Iron Age necropolises in the Sarno valley. The site documents advanced hydraulic knowledge and engineering prowess among Bronze and Iron Age Campanians. Multidisciplinary excavations have uncovered extensive evidence of craft production—metalwork, bone carving, glass paste, and amber working—indicating economic complexity and trade networks extending beyond the immediate valley.
