Textile Museum

One of Europe’s foremost institutions documenting the history of weaving from antiquity to the present day, housing approximately six thousand textiles and related artefacts.

At a glance

The Textile Museum preserves an internationally significant collection spanning weaving techniques, dyeing practices, and textile machinery across nearly two millennia. The collection grew from a foundational donation of 14th–19th century fabrics and has expanded through systematic acquisition into a comprehensive resource for textile history and conservation studies.

History

The museum’s first nucleus was established in 1975 following a donation of historical fabrics by private collector Loriano Bertini to the Tullio Buzzi Industrial Technical Institute, an educational facility for chemical, textile and mechanical training. The collections remained at the institute until 1997, when the museum relocated to new premises in Piazza del Comune, where it operated until April 2003.

Since its founding, acquisitions from former textile students and other sources have transformed the collection into one of absolute importance at international level. The museum is currently managed by a foundation comprising the municipality and province of Prato, the Industrial Union, Cariprato, and the Chamber of Commerce.

What you see

The collection documents textile arts from the early Christian era through contemporary production, presenting approximately six thousand finds across varied execution techniques. Beyond woven fabrics, the heritage includes a notable book collection, 19th-century fashion figures, historical weaving machinery, chemical dyeing samples, and textile preparation tools spanning multiple periods—each category illuminating different aspects of textile manufacture and commerce.

Cultural significance

Prato has been a centre of textile production for centuries, and this museum serves as the institutional memory of that craft tradition. The collection’s breadth—from early Christian textiles to modern examples—positions it as essential for understanding both technical evolution and cultural expression through cloth. The inclusion of machinery and dyeing samples offers material evidence of manufacturing processes often absent from conventional art collections.
