Egyptian Museum Munich

One of Europe’s finest collections of Egyptian antiquities, tracing its origins to the Renaissance acquisitions of Duke Albert V of Bavaria.

At a glance

The Egyptian Museum Munich holds a distinguished collection spanning thousands of years of pharaonic civilization. The museum’s holdings originated in the 16th century with Duke Albert V, whose discerning eye assembled treasures that would form the nucleus of Bavarian cultural identity.

History

Duke Albert V of Bavaria began acquiring Egyptian artifacts during the Renaissance, establishing what would become one of the most important European collections outside the Mediterranean. The formal museum was founded in 1966, recognizing and organizing these centuries-old holdings into a dedicated institution.

Currently housed in the Munich Residence, the collection occupies temporary quarters while a new purpose-built structure rises in the Kunstareal museum district, opposite the Old Picture Gallery.

What you see

The museum’s new building, under construction in the Kunstareal, will provide dedicated modern galleries for the Egyptian collection. The current location at Munich Residence offers historical context, connecting Renaissance collecting practices to contemporary museum display.

Cultural significance

The collection documents the artistic and religious achievements of ancient Egypt with particular depth in sculpture, funerary objects, and decorative arts. Its formation reflects the humanist enthusiasm of Renaissance princes who recognized Egyptian culture as foundational to Western civilization.
