The Gianni Caproni Museum of Aeronautics is Italy’s oldest aviation museum, as well as the country’s oldest corporate museum. It was established in 1927 by Italian aviation pioneer and aeronautical engineer Giovanni Battista “Gianni” Caproni and his wife Timina Guasti Caproni. The museum preserves and displays one of the most significant collections of early aircraft in Europe, documenting the formative decades of powered flight from an Italian perspective.
History
Gianni Caproni (1886–1957) was born in Arco, near Lake Garda, and became one of the most prolific and influential aircraft designers of the early 20th century. His firm, Caproni, produced bombers and transport aircraft that served in the First World War and beyond, and he was among the first to envision large multi-engine aircraft for both military and commercial use. Recognising the historical importance of the artefacts accumulating in his workshops, Caproni established the museum in 1927 to preserve the physical evidence of aviation’s first quarter century. The collection was subsequently donated to the Italian state and is now managed as a national heritage institution.
What you see
The museum’s hangars contain original aircraft and full-scale reconstructions spanning the period from the earliest biplanes of the 1900s to Second World War-era machines. Particularly notable are examples of Caproni’s own designs, including large triplane bombers that represented the cutting edge of technology in their day. Alongside the aircraft, the museum displays aero-engines, propellers, instruments, uniforms, medals, photographs, and documentary archives that reconstruct the world of early Italian aviation. Getting there
The museum is located in Mattarello, approximately 5 km south of Trento city centre. From Trento railway station, take bus line 5 towards Mattarello. By car, follow the SS12 south from Trento; the museum is signposted at Mattarello. The A22 Brenner motorway provides access from Verona to the south and Bolzano to the north.
