Monforte Castle
Monforte Castle is a ruined medieval fortification located near the town of Capriati a Volturno in the province of Caserta, Campania, in the Matese highland area bordering Molise. Positioned on a strategic ridge above the upper Volturno valley, the castle was a significant defensive stronghold during the Norman and Swabian periods and later played a role in the control of transhumance routes between the Apennines and the Campanian lowlands. The ruins retain substantial sections of perimeter wall and tower bases.

Overview
Monforte Castle occupies a commanding hilltop in the Matese mountain area, at the junction of the upper Volturno valley and the historic Apennine transhumance routes. The ruin is visible from a considerable distance, a landmark in an otherwise sparsely populated highland landscape that straddles the administrative boundary between Campania and Molise. The site is surrounded by oak and beech woodland characteristic of the Matese uplands.
History
The castle’s origins date to the Norman conquest of southern Italy in the 11th century, when the new ruling class constructed a network of hilltop fortifications to control the mountainous interior territories. Monforte was among the strategically important castles that guarded the Volturno valley corridor, a vital passage between the Tyrrhenian coast and the inland Apennine plateau. During the Swabian and early Angevin periods the castle was reinforced and used as an administrative centre for the surrounding territory. Decline set in during the 15th century as power consolidated in lowland towns and the upland fortress lost its strategic relevance.
What you see
Visitors approaching the ruin through wooded terrain encounter substantial stretches of the original curtain wall, built in limestone blocks quarried from the local hillside. Several tower bases remain standing to a significant height, preserving evidence of the castle’s original polygonal defensive plan. The interior of the former bailey is now an open grassy area scattered with fallen masonry. From the highest point of the ruin, panoramic views extend across the Matese plateau, the Volturno valley, and on clear days towards the distant Campanian plain.
Cultural significance
Monforte Castle is a tangible remnant of Norman territorial organisation in southern Italy, a period that fundamentally shaped the political and cultural geography of the Mezzogiorno. Together with dozens of similar hilltop ruins scattered across Campania and Molise, it testifies to a medieval landscape in which mountain fortifications were central to the exercise of power and the management of long-distance pastoral economies.

Getting there
The castle is best reached by car via the SS158 road through the Matese area; the nearest town with services is Capriati a Volturno. A trail from the village leads up to the ruins in approximately 30–40 minutes on foot. Public transport connections to this area are limited; a private vehicle or organised excursion is recommended. The road from Piedimonte Matese offers the most comfortable access to the area.
