House of Architect A. D. Kryachkov
A wooden Art Nouveau mansion designed by Siberian architect Andrey Kryachkov as a manifesto for modern timber construction, now housing Russia’s only architecture museum devoted to wooden buildings.
At a glance
This austere wooden mansion on Kirov Avenue demonstrates that timber could be sophisticated, economically sound, and contemporary. Built with cutting-edge utilities—hot-water heating, running water, sewerage, ventilation—it challenged prevailing assumptions about wood as a building material in early-20th-century Siberia.
History
Kryachkov initially conceived the house in Neo-Russian style but abandoned it for Art Nouveau’s rationalist principles. The finished design rejected ornament in favour of geometric clarity and restraint. The mansion remained a family residence until 1959, when it passed to the Tomsk Polytechnic Institute. It later became home to the Museum of Wooden Architecture, a role it retains today.
What you see
The exterior displays the geometric discipline characteristic of rationalist Art Nouveau—clean lines, functional proportions, spare decoration. Both exterior and interior follow this austere aesthetic, with ornamentation conceived as integral to the structure rather than applied surface treatment. The building’s rational design extends to its innovative hidden mechanical systems, unprecedented in Siberian residential architecture.
Cultural significance
The house stands as both architectural experiment and historical document. It attracted notable Tomsk intellectuals—architects Konstantin Lygin and Vikenty Orzheshko; geologist Vladimir Obruchev and other scholars. As Russia’s sole former wooden residential mansion housing an architecture museum, it preserves not only its own innovative design but also the cultural heritage of timber building traditions across Siberia.
