Villa Giusti Del Giardino
A seventeenth-century Venetian villa transformed into a romantic estate, now celebrated for its botanical gardens and cultural heritage.
At a glance
Villa Giusti Del Giardino stands on the edge of Bassano del Grappa’s historic center, a layered estate reflecting centuries of patrician life. The complex combines architecture from its original construction with later romantic interventions and now functions as an events venue and gardens destination.
History
The villa was built in complete form during the first half of the seventeenth century at the behest of the Zambelli family. When ownership passed to the patrician Girolamo Ascanio Molin in the eighteenth century, the villa became a celebrated cultural salon—a meeting place for writers, artists, and the intellectual minds of the era.
In the nineteenth century, the property entered the Giusti del Giardino family through the marriage of Paola Molin to Count Carlo Giusti. Count Girolamo, their son, undertook a major transformation in the villa’s first half, creating a clearly romantic park inaugurated in 1861. The estate remained in the Giusti family’s hands until 2000, when Villa Giusti del Giardino srl became its owner.
What you see
The villa’s architecture encompasses the original seventeenth-century structure and later romantic-era additions. The grounds reveal the evolving aesthetic preferences of its residents, culminating in Count Girolamo’s nineteenth-century park design.
The landscape extends across grounds that have been extensively renovated. The park contains over 1,300 trees representing more than one hundred different plant species, including numerous centuries-old specimens and dedicated rose gardens—establishing it as one of the region’s most botanically significant estates.
Cultural significance
The villa represents the intellectual and social aspirations of Venetian patrician society across three centuries. During the Molin period, it functioned as a salon for enlightened minds, embodying the cultural vitality of eighteenth-century Veneto. The romantic transformation of its gardens reflects the aesthetic shift of the nineteenth century while preserving layers of earlier history.
